And here is what the Bible has to say about the existence of the midwife -- nothing. There was no midwife. "Joseph also went up from Galilee" (Luke 2:4) "To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child" (Luke 2:5). There is no mention about bringing along a midwife. "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7). Again, there is no mention that they found a midwife in Bethlehem. To add such a story into the scheme of things making it some elaborate belief is "Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition" (Mark 7:13).
