Matthew 10:36-37 states, "And a man's foes [shall be] they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me." It is not easy to cut out toxic family members but just because they are related to a person does not mean we are forced to interact. The blood of Jesus is thicker than the water of birth. If a family member is toxic, is disrupting the relationship with Jesus, then it is permitted of God to distance oneself. It becomes complicated when a person is a mere child and cannot just pick up and go live on their own. Also, relationships like husband and wife or the responsibility to raise a child cannot be severed nor is it biblical: "For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy" (1 Corinthians 7:14). If grandparents go behind the backs of parents and interfere with godly raising, absolutely it time for distancing.
