The article uses phrases like: "woefully unprepared financially for retirement", "some 40% don't have a penny saved for retirement", "data indicate that the vast majority are not even close to having enough savings to retire", "The American Dream of retirement is going to be a nightmare for too many Gen-Xers", "they'll need savings of at least $1 million to retire comfortably", "The status quo means we are looking at elder poverty for many Gen-Xers and pressure on their families for support", and others. This is what the Bible states regarding planning for retirement ... (nothing). As the article admitted, it is "the American dream". What the article failed to state was the option of not retiring. If a person is able to work, why are they forced to retire because of reaching a certain age? Those that can afford life in retirement living the "the American dream", what a blessing! But it is unnecessary to worry or belittle any group of people because they chose to intentionally or unintentionally not chase "the American dream". Gen Xers that are seeing events unfolding may be doing their best to get out of debt and prepare for Jesus to return in their life time -- "the Heavenly hope!" "And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure" (1 John 3:3).
