Ferry breakdowns ‘a rebuke from God’ for sailings on Sabbath

Article Date - 07/18/2022

An increase in ferry breakdowns shows “God’s displeasure” after the introduction of Sunday sailings to the Western Isles by Scotland’s state operator, says a church leader.

The Rev David Blunt, clerk to the Free Church (Continuing) of Scotland’s North Uist and Grimsay presbytery in the islands, said an analysis of mechanical failures in CalMac’s fleet showed a “remarkable” difference between breakdowns before and after Sabbath sailings started in 2009. Poor weather had also played a bigger part since a single Sabbath ferry was introduced on the route to the Outer Hebrides, a Free Church (Continuing) stronghold, Blunt said, adding that it was part of God’s “rebuke”.
