The North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted Saturday to call on the state legislature to repeal House Bill 2.
Representing more than 200 Lutheran churches in the state, the N.C. synod meeting in Charlotte passed a resolution that also said HB2 discriminates against the LGBT community and the working poor and “creates a hostile community atmosphere.”
The faith group’s action comes after similar condemnations and calls for the law’s repeal by bishops of the state’s United Methodist and Episcopal churches.
Others, including the Catholic Dioceses of Charlotte and Raleigh and the state’s Southern Baptist churches, favored the legislature passing a bill to override a Charlotte City Council ordinance that would have extended anti-discrimination protections to the LGBT community.
The ELCA is also a more liberal denomination than the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
